A critique

The author’s, who wrote this bibliography, main point was ‘stress at work’. He wants readers to know what the causes of job stress are. He emulated some information about causes of job stress that are well-organized and easy to understand. Background knowledge was not pretty much needed because we’ve had experienced about it every day. Moreover, the author stated some examples about job stress in details, and made me feel as if it were real.
One thing I want to criticize, however, is among the examples, one of them was ‘job stress and women’. He agreed with women’s feeling in their workplace where they have to endure mental and physical harassment. Also he said that women usually get stress from unwelcome verbal or physical conduct, and offensive or intimidating behavior. I thought it can be true. On the other hand, I thought that the writer had better write not only women’s but also men’s side. Because men also can have stress from women who don’t want to work same as men. In other words, now the author wrote very well, but if he treated both sides, it could be more perfect without any discontent.

#4 reading task !

According to Robert Burns in "Unwind‐ 10 Ways to Manage Stress and Improve your Wellbeing" published in 1992 , when stressed, people experience a number of physiological responses and get physical and emotional problems easily.
According to Burns, Physical effects are as follows. “A sudden shock may cause people to sweat, to start trembling, or may faint or even vomit”. (Robert Burns, Unwind, 1992, p.59) He stated that if disorders persist long enough, these may become organic illnesses. In other words, excessive amounts of stress over prolonged periods can lead to serious illness, including heart disease and cancer.(Robert Burns, Unwind, 1992, p.84) Moreover, he showed emotional effects of stress that are including anxiety, depression, hysteria and obsessions.
In this book, Burns suggests some managements of stress, one of them is “Managing your time effectively”.(Robert Burns, Unwind, 1992, p.214) He said that there are main points to remember. One of them is to establish and schedule priorities.(Rubert Burns, Unwind, 1992, p.221) Another one he said is to do the things you want to do. Burns explained that people should increase their time to choose when they can do the things they want to do. Like this way, he gives advice people to manage their time effectively.

A critique of my text

The author who wrote this bibliography gave me useful information about ‘physical benefits of exercise’ which is one of ways to maintain good health. It was logical and well-organized text. His intended audience might be older than high school students because great wealth of knowledge is needed if readers want to understand every term. He had an underlying assumption which is that the major cause of death in Australia is heart disease. He compared last 10-year people who didn’t have regular exercise programmes with today people who have become involved in regular exercise programmes. It was helpful evidence for me to believe benefits of exercise.

However, from following paragraph, the author showed himself diffident. Because according to the paragraph, he neither convinced readers that his article is true, because of these words, ‘perhaps’, ‘seems’. These words were able for me to be confused that the fact is true or not. Also this sentence contained these words evoked a strong response from me. It was that ‘people who are overweight do not necessarily eat more than those with normal weight, but they do move less.’ It might not be true. In my opinion, when the people are at workplaces, they must be busy doing their own positions, sometimes they can have shiftworking, so their work time will be unstable. It can make people eat at night during working. It means that the environments of them could make people overweight. This sentence in this paragraph could make overweight people upset. In my opinion, the author should have had the exact words or supportable evidences in this part.

Reading task #3 -"stress"

According to Robert Burns in "Unwind‐ 10 Ways to Manage Stress and Improve your Wellbeing", there are several useful ways to release individual's stress which comes from various sources.

Burns suggested being prepared for the future. In other words, planning for the future will make you better prepared for the stressful life events that are bound to occur in everybody's life now and in the coming years.(RobertBurns,Unwind,p.250) Also in this chapter, Burns enumerated what other people can do by themselves to cope, and what adults can do to help children cope.

Burns discussed other ways and means of controlling stress such as "Maintain Good Health"(skill 4, Unwind),which shows readers healthy diet manual and the benefits of exercise, "Enhance Your Self-concept"(skill 5, Unwind) which is that the author thought understanding ourselves will help us to become more positive about ourselves and allow us to build on our strengths and achieve what we are truly capable of, and mentioning "Build Relationship", Burns expected that it will help people to cope with stressful events much more effectively.

Reading task #2

Reading Task # 2 Julie

According to Robert Burns in "Unwind- 10 Ways to Manage Stress and Improve your Wellbeing", job stress is one of the most common work-related problems, which result from the interaction of the worker and the conditions of work.
Burns enumerated the causes of job stress such as… (- here! there are many examples, so I’ll write them if they are necessary.) Also Burns said that many large companies are providing stress management training and 'EAP'(Employee Assistance Programmes) to improve the ability of workers to cope with difficult work situations.
Burns viewed a facet of environmental stress. He emphasized that density of population can be measured in a number of different ways. To sum up, people in cities may so restrict their contacts with other people that loneliness becomes the greatest source of stress.
Burns has examined major job stressors and environmental stressors. He described that the aim is to accept that a certain amount of stress is necessary for optimum performance, and that we need to work with stress and not against it.

the 1st Summary -"Stress"

07.07.13 - what is stress, first skill : Be positive!

Robert Burns (1937~) in "unwind : 10 ways to manage stress and improve your well being" which is his bibliography, he said that most people are trapped in various physical and psychological stress, so they try to find many different ways to release it.
He described if people are under stress, what is going on their body, brain and hormones etc. He emphasized that stress is any demand that requires some kind of physical or emotional adjustment, also he stated elimination of all stress is not a realistic solution to the problems of our complex society. He had been explaining what the 10 skills are and how to cope techniques that should be helpful to us.
He cited Alvin Toffler who predicted "future shock" that is lifestyles and work patterns become more diverse and temporary, and then he supported stress levels are increasing in the twenty-one century.
At the first skill of ways to manage stress, he claimed "Be positive". According to the psychologist Albert Ellis(1977), the variations of the 'musts', 'shoulds' and 'if onlys' of self-punishing thinking show how faulty thinking keeps people from facing reality, and he suggested thought-stopping. And Robert recommended constructive self-talk, enjoying yourself, preparing in advance, etc.
He had examined these and many other tips for being positive that puts us in the right frame of mind for effective stress management.
